The term “laminar” refers to a specific type of air movement in which fluid lines of air run perfectly parallel to one another without any obstructions or crosscurrents to break their straight movement. Also called “streamline”, laminar air flow is often found in clean rooms coming from air filters in the ceiling, dispersing against objects on the ground and effectively pushing air particles to the floor. This type of air movement helps keep the room (or working space, as in the case of a laminar cabinet or workbench) free from air pollutants.

Another type of airflow commonly found in clean rooms is “turbulent air flow”. Turbulent flow is caused by fans or other type of air dispersers releasing air from ceiling or wall filters in a circular movement, so that the air falls not streamlined, but in a circular motion. This type of movement swirls air particles in a downward motion towards the floor and vents. Different types or airflow are preferred by different manufacturers, but both serve essentially the same purpose.

Laminar flow cabinets contain the same basic design and purpose of laminar flow clean rooms, but on a much smaller scale. Flow cabinets are usually workbench size, or small enough to fit on a tabletop but with an extremely contained environment; often there is a soft or glass partition between the cabinet and the outside air with spaces for a worker to place his or her hands. Laminar air flow comes from a filtering hood above the workspace, keeping away contaminating air particles.
